Skiing at Val Thorens, France

Located deep within the French Alps, Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe with an incredible elevation of 2,300 metres above sea level. The extreme altitude means that this resort generally opens from mid-November up until the start of May. This is the ultimate resort for skiers of all levels from beginner to expert.

But that’s not all. Val Thorens is more than just a ski resort. If you’re up for something different, ice diving, paragliding, sled dogs and yoga classes are but a few of the activities on offer.

Are you traveling with kids? Val Thorens is a great resort for children too. Ski instructors will help your young ones learn the basics of skiing in a fun and friendly environment. There are even babysitters on site to take care of the little ones in the evening and a bowling alley and a cinema to keep the teenagers entertained.

Snowboarding at Arinsal, Andorra

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Andorra, it’s a tiny country nestled in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain. Arinsal is by no means the biggest resort in Europe but it is very peaceful and very relaxing, the perfect escape from the cacophony of construction and cars in Malta! The charming little village has all the amenities that you would expect including cheap lodging, a good nightlife and great places to eat. The resort itself is absolutely ideal for first time snowboarders with a small terrain park where you can practice the basics. There are also plenty of nursery slopes where you can test your newly learned snowboarding skills in the wilderness. If you’re looking for a winter activity holiday to get away from it all, learn a new skill and enjoy the simple things, then Arinsal is perfect for you.

Ice Skating at Lac de Joux, Switzerland

Lac de Joux is a lake located over 1,000 metres above sea level in the Jura Mountains in Switzerland. Interestingly, during the winter months the entire lake freezes over creating a massive 9.5 km² ice rink, the largest open-air ice skating rink in Europe! It is an annual delight that attracts locals and tourists alike to the pristine, unspoilt location. On the weekends the frozen lake becomes a hive of activity with many stalls popping up selling warm beverages and snacks. Le Pont, a small village on the lake, is a good access point as it is very close to the train station. You can also rent skates from Le Pont on the weekend if you don’t have your own. Be sure to get here early though as the number of skates is limited and the number of people on the lake is not. Don’t let this put you off though, the lake is definitely big enough for everyone!

Snowmobiling through Lapland, Finland

Go on an activity holiday like no other through the frozen tundra of Lapland in Northern Finland. Embark on an adventure through snowy forests and frozen lakes far from civilisation! Snowmobile tours are very common throughout the region of Lapland and are without a doubt the best way to see the extraordinary landscape. All tours are organised by professional guides that know the area very well meaning you will get the most out of your time here. Why not visit the reindeer farms or take a ride on a sledge commandeered by huskies? How about a visit to Santa’s Workshop? The fleeting hours of daylight in winter also makes it the perfect time to experience the flashing colours of the Northern Lights. No matter how you decide to spend your time snowmobiling, you will never forget this ethereal experience.
