5 Tips for Choosing the Right Workout Gear

When it comes to working out, many find it hard to find motivation and this becomes even more difficult during the hot summer months. However, there are many ways in which you can motivate yourself towards achieving your goal. One way of doing so is by making sure you own the right workout gear. Nothing is more demotivating than working out in uncomfortable clothing. Follow our tips for choosing the right workout gear for a more refreshing and satisfactory workout!

1) Choose the right fabrics

A common mistake, which many beginners to the active world make, is that of exercising in 100% cotton clothing, due to the perceived comfort and softness of such clothing. However, keep in mind that when you sweat, cotton does not dry quickly and thus, this will keep you feeling sweatier and sweatier.  Instead, opt for fabrics that are breathable and synthetic, such as Polyester, Spandex, and Lycra. In this way, your sweat will not be stuck to your skin but rather, it will be evaporated.

2) Choose the right fit

Although ‘comfortable’ is often associated with ‘baggy’, consider that baggy clothing does not only increase your body’s temperature but it may also hinder your performance while working out. Therefore, it’s always best to go for form-fitting clothes that move with your body. That being said, keep in mind that there is a difference between form-fitting clothing and extremely tight clothing. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s comfortable!

3) Choose the right pair of shoes

Align your choice of shoes with the kind of activity you are engaging in, be it running, walking, cycling, field sports or court sports. Additionally, regardless of your usual shoe size, take your time to decide which is the perfect size for you as some sports’ shoes come with very specific sizes. Changing your shoes after a certain amount of period is also very important. For instance, if you train once or twice per week, making a change once a year would be enough. But if you train almost every day, the change must at least be done on a quarterly basis.

4) Choose the right underwear

You may be wearing the best workout gear out there but if you are not wearing appropriate underwear for sports, chances are the discomfort will persist. Thus, be sure to opt for the right fabrics and shapes also for your underwear, and if you’re a woman, equip yourself with a good sports bra which will soon become your new best friend.

5) Choose the right accessories

While wearing the traditional kind of accessories while working out is certainly not recommendable, you should consider investing in workout accessories that will further motivate you to exercise. Some examples include a pair of sweat-proof headphones, a water-resistant armband to hold your phone, a running belt, a fancy gym bag and ultimately, a BPA-free water bottle.

Regardless of where you normally stand in the comfort vs. style argument, when exercising be sure to always stand on the comfort side. By wearing a comfortable workout gear, you will not only be protecting your body from developing unnecessary reactions to bad and uncomfortable clothing, but overall, you will also feel much better about yourself.
